Synagogue

This small synagogue owes its charm to the determination of a small and oppressed community that although forcibly confined in the poverty of the ghetto expressed its desire for dignity through the conviction of its faith and by reserving for this cluster of rooms the most noble position and most heart-felt attention, using all the means available to them.

It is hidden from the outside world behind an anonymous wooden door on the public street, at the top of a simple stair.

Among the benches, facing the Aron, the historical atmosphere of a place where children studied, women chatted in the Women's Gallery and the rabbi read the Torah at the Tevah in the middle of the prayer hall, remains vivid, perpetuating a community bond with the values of an enduring  tradition.

The Foundation sponsored a three-year effort, under the guide of architect Deborah Gutowitz to restore the Synagogue. The Foundation would like to thank the Jewish Community of Turin, the Piedmontese Regional Government?, the Foundations: Compagnia di San Paolo, Cassa di Risparmio di Torino, Cassa di Risparmio di Cuneo, and the Calabi family for their generous support throughout the restoration process.
